– 2027. As part of the “HEARTS” project, a speech therapist and a psychologist have been hired to work with children with developmental disabilities
As part of the project “HEARTS” – “Equal access to health services for all vulnerable groups”, the Public institution “Medical centre and the infirmary” Žepče” has hired an additional speech therapist and psychologist as of November 1, 2024 as part of the project called “HEARTS” – “Equal access to health services for all vulnerable groups”, to provide early intervention services to children with developmental disabilities in order to reduce waiting lists for treatment.
Namely, partners in the cross-border area face identical problems and challenges due to the lack of resources to provide quality and timely services for children with developmental disabilities and their families. One of the main goals is to ensure early intervention that will improve the cognitive, emotional and physical development of children. The project represents a significant step forward in ensuring, a more inclusive and accessible health system, in which every child will have equal opportunities for development and success, and will also enable networking, exchange of experiences and transfer of knowledge between service providers.
In addition to strengthening the capacity of health institutions and experts in providing services to children with developmental disabilities, it is also very important to increase awareness among the general public about the importance of early intervention and integration of children with disabilities into the community. The problem that all health institutions face, in addition to the lack of professional staff, is the passivity of parents and the failure to recognize the problems their child has. The project will seek to more actively educate the entire local community, and especially parents, to recognize the problem as early as possible so that it is not too late for intervention.
One of the features of the project is the formation of mobile teams of professional staff who will work with children and parents in the regional clinics in Željezno Polje, Begov Han and Ozimica in recognizing and treating problems in children with developmental disabilities.
All parents who have recognized or suspect that their child has developmental disabilities are invited to contact the Public institution “Medical centre and the infirmary” Žepče every day from 7 am to 3 pm to receive professional help.
The HEARTS project has been approved for funding under the INTERREG VI-A IPA Croatia-Bosnia and Herzegovina-Montenegro cross-border cooperation programme 2021-2027. The project partners are the Vukovar-Srijem County Community Service Centre as the lead partner, the Vukovar-Srijem County Development Agency, the Žepče Development Agency, the Public institution “Medical centre and the infirmary” Žepče and the Podgorica Association of Parents of Children with Developmental Disabilities. The project duration is 30 months, and the total budget for all project partners is €1,716,255.00, of which 85% is financed by the EU and 15% is co-financed by the project partners.
