U Žepču je predstavljen projekt prekogranične suradnje pod nazivom „HEARTS – Healthcare Equity and Access for Resilient Targeted Support“ financiran u sklopu  INTERREG VI-A IPA Hrvatska-Bosna i Hercegovina-Crna Gora 2021. – 2027.

The project “HEARTS – Healthcare Equity and Access for Resilient Targeted Support” was presented in Žepče

In Žepče, a cross-border cooperation project entitled “HEARTS – Healthcare Equity and Access for Resilient Targeted Support” was presented, financed as part of the INTERREG VI-A IPA Croatia-Bosnia and Herzegovina-Montenegro 2021-2027. It is a project that ensures equal access health services for all vulnerable groups in the cross-border area. The project holders are five institutions from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Montenegro, and the focus is on improving the conditions for socialization and work with children with developmental disabilities. The value of the project is 1.7 million euros and will be implemented for the next 30 months.

The Development Agency Žepče, one of the project partners, hosted the first kick-off conference, which was attended by representatives of the partner organizations: the Vukovar-Srijem County Community Service Center, the Vukovar-Srijem County Development Agency, NGO “Association of Parents of Children with Developmental Disabilities Podgorica, the Public institution “Medical centre and the infirmary” Žepče, representatives of the municipal administration led by the municipal mayor Mato Zovko, the Minister of Health in the Zenica-Doboj County Aida Salčinović with her associates, representatives of elementary schools and preschool institutions, the Center for Children and Adults with Special Needs, as well as representatives of non-governmental organizations that care for children and youth with developmental disabilities from Žepče, Zavidovići and Zenica. During the conference, the problems in healthcare for children with developmental disabilities in the project area were discussed, as well as examples of good practice that are still rare but should be welcomed and efforts should be made to “transfer” them in other project areas.

Project activities include furnishing premises and purchasing equipment to improve working conditions for professionals who care for children and youth with developmental disabilities. One of the features of the project is the formation of mobile teams of experts who will work with children and parents in regional clinics to identify problems with children who have developmental difficulties.

One of the problems faced by all healthcare institutions is the passivity of parents as well as the failure to recognize the problems their child has. The project will try to actively educate the entire local community, especially parents, to recognize the problem as early as possible so that it is not too late to intervene when the child starts school.

The planned equipment for the Public institution “Medical centre and the infirmary” Žepče will enable the provision of better services for children with developmental difficulties, through the equipping of the Early Intervention Center, and the planned acquisition of Neurofeedback, a digital speech therapy set, equipment for the sensory room, play attention program and the acquisition of IT equipment for professional staff who will work with children. In addition to the existing staff, another psychologist and speech therapist will be employed who will work with children in the field, that is, in regional clinics in Ozimica, Begov Han and Željezno Polje.

According to the director dr. Tanja Radoš Kosić said that the planned activities should lead to improved healthcare for children in these areas. “This is important because it will enable them to have timely access to the necessary medical care,” concluded Radoš Kosić. Branka Janko, Director of the Development Agency Žepče, believes that this approach contributes to reducing health inequalities and improving the quality of life of the local community. “We should definitely monitor the implementation and effects of these activities and determine whether they are sufficient to adequately meet the health needs of children in rural areas,” said Janko. Municipal Mayor Mato Zovko expressed his satisfaction with the new cross-border cooperation project implemented in the municipality of Žepče and is one of a total of five EU projects in which the Municipality of Žepče and the Development Agency Žepče participated. “Implementation of activities that improve access to and quality of healthcare for children in rural areas certainly deserves pride and recognition”, concluded Zovko.
