As part of the “HEARTS” project, the training of professional staff was held for the application of PECS in working with children with developmental disabilities

As part of the „HEARTS – Healthcare Equity and Access for Resilient Targeted Support“ project, implemented under the Interreg IPA Cross-border Cooperation Programme Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2021–2027, in Slavonski Brod, education for professional staff on the application of the PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) method of a communication system intended for people with verbal communication difficulties, especially children with autism spectrum disorders was held. The education was attended by employees of the Public Institution “Medical centre and the infirmary Žepče”, employees of the Center for Community Service Provision of Vukovar-Srijem County and employees of the Association of Parents of Children with Developmental Disabilities Podgorica, members of the project team.

During the two-day training, experts of various profiles acquired knowledge and practical skills for applying the PECS method in their daily work.

Special emphasis is placed on the development of functional communication through the six phases of PECS, encouraging the child's initiation in communication, and the proper creation and use of communication cards.

The training was conducted by “PIKTOGRAM – trade for education and consulting” from Slavonski Brod, and the lecturer was Andrew Yates, a certified PECS trainer from the organization “Pyramid Educational Consultants”.

By participating in professional education for the application of the PECS method, the experts acquired specialized knowledge and practical skills for working with children who have difficulties in verbal communication. In addition to education, the professional staff had the opportunity to exchange experiences and good practices with experts from the region.

This education represents an important step towards strengthening the capacity of experts in the cross-border area, but also towards creating more accessible and inclusive services for vulnerable groups. The “HEARTS” project is aimed at reducing inequality in access to health and social services, and the investment in education is a concrete example of the sustainable changes that the project brings.

Upon completion of the education, the participants obtained an internationally recognized certificate, which further strengthens the quality of work in the field of early intervention.
